  • A candidate for election to the Berri-Barmera Council, Mr. Tom Towle of Barmera, believes politicians, Federal, State and Local, should always be prepared to listen to what the community has to say. "Perhaps it should be compulsory for would be politicians to go to TAFE to be trained, 'Cert IV in Listening'. We expect all sectors of society to be qualified, but not politicians," he said

For example, the community constantly complains about debt levels of public authorites yet they seem to continue to climb. The reality is if you are paying $1,000,000 in interest each year there is less money in the bank to pay for badly needed services. Council income is going to feed the coffers of financiers. I will certainly not agree to unproductive increases in debt or to unecessary increases in costs to the community.

"The first duty of a politician is to listen and adapt because often some policy makers seem oblivious to the consequences of their decsions while others don't seem to live in the real world." Tom says he pledges to "give support, as a representative voice in council, to assist all sectors achieve desireable goals in addition to supporting productive proposals from Governments or other members, which have the total well being of residents, property owners, farmers and business at its core. I will vigorously oppose any which don't".

He said "My lifeskills, QUALIFICATIONS, ACCREDITATIONS, formal SKILLS, open door and open mind policy, equips me to be a representative voice in the Berri-Barmera Council, for all areas.

I am not afraid to deal with difficult issues. For example, I took on the Commonwealth Employment Service and won, because", he said, "it was empire building rather than assisting farmers obtain productive employees for harvest". Soon after his victory the CES was dismantled by the Canberra Government and performance based contracts awarded to the private sector.

In 1987, Tom Towle and his then wife, Ellen, created history when they stood together as a team for the Australian Federal Senate. Tom has also been ACTIVE in local government politics at Port Pirie, Whyalla and Kingston SE.

WORK EXPERIENCE includes Banking, Transport (Truck, Bus & Train), Mining, Welfare, Education, Building, Livestock, Agriculture.

His most recent jobs as Support worker for persons with a disability and Accommodation Manager at a Backpackers Hostel, involved contact with disadvantaged and farmers, providing some insight into difficulties faced within the community.

Tom is quick to point out he also holds a White Card, a Heavy Combination driver's licence and Fork Lift licence, showing he is not afraid of menial work.

Tom Towle is resident and rate payer, a member of the Barmera-Monash Football Club and a Volunteer for Make a Wish in the Riverland.

Tom says "From a lifetime encompassing a range of experiences I have developed diverse INTERESTS, one very stimulating being to research family history.
